  1. Dr Shelly Mills out of Defiance, Ohio is NOT foreskin knowledgeable. I have taken my then 7 month old to her in the past couple of months and she retracted my son, even after I told her we left our previous pediatrician due to forced retraction and that I do not want him retracted. She even suggested that I get him circumcised, but that they don't do that until they are after a year old if we miss the opportunity when they are newborn. She seemed quite puzzled when I very adamantly said I will NOT mutilate my son. I have sent reading material to her and will give her one more and one last chance to educate herself.

    1. Thank you for your feedback on this physician. We have removed Mills from the list.

  2. I have an excellent pediatrician to add. He actually gave ME a lecture on not retracting the foreskin. When I asked him if my son would resent me someday for NOT having him cut, this doctor explained that the US was pretty much the only developed nation who practiced RIC. He affirmed that there was NO reason whatsoever to circumcise a baby. (He even added, "Listen, I'm even Jewish, and I'm telling you there is absolutely no reason for circumcision). He is also supportive of parents who choose not to vax.

  3. We take our five month old son to John Delliquadri in Girard and have never had a problem with him. He has never once taken my sons diaper off either.

  4. Dr. Dickerson in Columbus knows that retraction often doesn't happen until puberty and knows not to force or advise retraction. He also gives a very positive response to parents who decide not to circumcise. The practice will do circumcisions, though.

  5. Dr. Hertzer at Advanced Pediatrics (Beachwood) is intact-friendly. She was in disbelief that any doctor would retract a child when we discussed it. They also do delayed or selective vaccinations.

  6. I chose Dr. Forsythe in Columbus on recommendation from another friend with several intact boys. She said he was the one who told her to never retract and just let it happen in it's own time. When I interviewed him over the phone to ask if those in his practice knew proper intact care, he seemed to be trying to argue against circumcision even though I told him we were already decided against it. He has never even touched my son's foreskin during exams.

  7. Dr. Sant in Columbus is a great doctor. I am a first time mom and she has been wonderful in helping to educate us and giving us resources to look at while at home. She 100‰ supports intact boys and knows all about proper techniques. She is also non vax friendly! She does not practice wholistic medicine....but is as close as it comes while not practicing. Oh and she also supports home births and works with many midwives in the area! :-) i would recommend her to anyone in the area!!!

  8. Dr. Kratz in West Liberty is foreskin friendly. We also do delay/selective vax and not only does he support it, he does the same for his kids. Love him!

As a pediatrician, I am dedicated to providing the best possible care for all of my patients, and I do so without regard to race, financial status, or gender. Thus, I am concerned about the apparent disparity in the opinions of the AAP regarding the circumcision of males and females.

In July 1998, the AAP Committee on Bioethics issued a statement condemning the mutilation of female genitalia.1 Although female genital mutilation (FGM) exists in many horrendous variations, that statement clearly included within its definition of FGM "excision of the skin surrounding the clitoris" [paragraph 6].

In that report the Committee also clearly stated that pediatricians should
"decline performing all medically unnecessary procedures to alter female
genitalia" [paragraph 4]. Furthermore, under the heading "Cultural and Ethical Issues" the Committee stated that the parents' cultural, societal, and religious beliefs do not give them the right to consent to a medically unnecessary procedure for their child.

Therefore, I was dismayed to read that in March 1999 the AAP Task Force on Circumcision failed to afford the same protection to our male patients.2 This report stated that male circumcision "is not essential to the child's well-being". In other words, it is not medically necessary. However, the Task Force stated that "it is legitimate for parents to take into account cultural, religious, and ethnic traditions ... when making this decision." This is something with which I strongly disagree. Just as no surgeon would perform a medically unnecessary appendectomy just because the parents desire one for their child, so should we, as the protectors of children, refuse to perform unnecessary mutilating procedures on our patients simply because of their parents' desires. Remember, we are not "religious" or "cultural" or "ethnic" practitioners. We are physicians who should practice medicine, not rituals.

Therefore, I hope that my fellow pediatricians will join me in declining to perform medically unnecessary procedures to alter either male or female genitalia, and I ask the AAP to reconvene the Committee on Bioethics to review the policy statement of the Task Force on Circumcision.

  10. Dr. Erin Fain at Mansfield Pediatrics in Mansfield, OH is foreskin friendly. I can't vouch for the rest of the office staff though. During my son's first visit, a PA tried to retract his foreskin. I stopped her and told Dr. Fain, who then spoke to the PA about the dangers of forced foreskin retraction. I haven't had another issue there since then (over a year ago).

Anyway, I don't see any doctors from Mansfield listed, so I thought I would tell you about Dr. Fain. I would just be sure to talk to her about your son's intact status at the first visit and make sure you diligently watch any other staff members.

  11. We take our son to Dr. Hani Haidar in Toledo, OH at Franklin Park Pediatrics. He is intact knowledgeable (I believe he is intact himself) and though we've never had a conversation about my son being intact, when I switched from a DO to Haidar, he asked why (by then my son was 9 months old) and I told him the DO wasnt intact knowledgeable (tried to retract him) and kicked us out bc we didnt want to vaccinate. he said "oh no, thats not good-you never retract when intact!" and is also supportive if you dont vax, vax on a different schedule, whatever you want. I love him! Im so glad we found him and I recommed him often. :)

    1. We have been taking our children to him for a couple of years now. They just recently changed their policies and are now forcing vaccinations. We just tried to make an appointment for our newborn and were rudely informed that they wouldn't even put us on the schedule unless we agreed to vaccinate. Looking for a new dr now.

  15. Be careful at Hilcrest Pediatric ER, Mayfield, OH... I had to take my 11 week old there for high fever and I told the nurse before she cathed him that he was intact and that she needed to be gentle with him. She forceably pushed back his foreskin all the way to expose the entire head of his penis! I freaked out, but because I am new to this baby boy business, I fell for her line that it was medically necessary and that she didn't force it. I told her everything I've read and been told went against that...only to have the DR (Carolyn Penrod) come into the room to reassure me that everything was ok, and what she did was normal. I feel awful for my son... We are also changing pediatricians because mine didn't think there was anything wrong with it and is constantly instructing me to pull back and clean, even after I told him I didn't agree and why, I am still left being treated like a "dumb" mom. Thank you for your information, I have made an appointment with a DR listed here in attempts to have a DR treat my son's penis the way I believe it should be.

  16. I am a pediatrician in West Jefferson, Ohio that is foreskin friendly and knowledgeable. I have two beautifully intact boys myself and hope to educate others on the dangers of routine circumcisions. I'm also very open to alternative vaccine schedules and those that choose not to vaccinate their children. I personally have chosen to vaccinate my children, but do choose an alternative schedule for them as well. I feel the relationship between patient families and the doctor is a partnership and look forward to welcoming those new families into my practice that share similar views! Additionally I'm a Christian doctor that hopes to serve all of those that walk through my door and spread the light of Jesus into their lives.
