❦ Halloween Milk! ❦

The Halloween Milk album at peaceful parenting on Facebook is always having photos flagged by lactiphobic onlookers - especially the cute little nursing 'pumpkins.' In 2011, half of all uploaded photos were removed by Facebook from the album. As a result, we're moving the gallery here and are excited to add your fun, furry-and-feathery milky photos to the collection this season.

You are welcome to upload or tag at the peaceful parenting Facebook page if this is easiest for you, or send to DrMomma.org@gmail.com and we will add yours in. We will watermark photos with your first/last name before posting, unless you request otherwise. If your photo or information was lost in past years' deletion, we invite you to email as well so we can update.

It's all just for fun ~ to celebrate the joys of gentle parenting as we plant some seeds and raise awareness throughout this month of pumpkins, costumes (and momma milk!).  If you're a mother seeking info on nursing your baby, we invite you to visit the Breastfeeding Resources Page and write to us anytime.

Peaceful Parenting Pumpkin Carving Contest

Pumpkin chalk drawing by Shannon of Intact Hawaii

It's a Pumpkin Carving Contest!!

With a peaceful parenting twist.

The goal? To incorporate a little bit of baby/child friendly advocacy into this season's pumpkins to raise awareness of the gentle mothering and fathering of our little ones, and have some creative fun along the way.

In the past, we've hosted breastfeeding and genital autonomy pumpkin carving contests. This year, we are mixing it all together and inviting you to submit your pumpkin creation from whatever peaceful parenting position is near and dear to your heart. Anything goes! Pumpkins can be carved or decorated.

We will be posting all photos of pumpkins submitted to us on this page and public voting will take place at DrMomma.org Nov 1-2. Awards will be given to the top 3 pumpkin creations according to this public vote.

Winners may select from an Intact Advocate prize pack, a Breastfeeding Advocate prize pack, a general Peaceful Parenting prize pack, or a combination of all ($20 value). Included will be cards, magnets, pens, sticky notes, bracelets and a tote bag to share a little love in your community in the upcoming months. All entries will receive a set of the Holiday Info Cards (pictured far below).

To submit your pumpkin, email photos to DrMomma.org@gmail.com You are also welcome to post to the peaceful parenting and/or Saving Our Sons Facebook pages, but to maintain contact information with artist, and email must also follow. Pumpkins will be displayed anonymously until voting is complete.

*UPDATE*
The voting poll on DrMomma.org via Google appeared to have technical problems or glitches. The results from the Facebook voting poll were all within 1-2 votes of each other. Therefore, we've decided to award a slightly smaller prize pack ($15 worth instead of $20) to each entrant this year. Please email DrMomma.org@gmail.com with your name, address, and let us know which entry was yours and which pack you'd like (Breastfeeding, Intact, or General/Combo pp).

When you use tampons, are you inserting mold into your body?

One woman recently went to use a Kotex brand tampon, and fortunately was a little clumsy getting it out of the packaging. She discovered patches of mold growing all over the product -- one that was seconds away from being inside her body. She wrote to the manufacturer and was horrified to discover that this is fairly common, and received a basic apology and coupons to buy more of their products.

Reusable sanitary pads (or moon pads) are one stellar option that many women have switched to in recent years. They do not cause cramping or mild contractions that many women experience when inserting something during a period, save oodles of money over the course of years, and are always clean and safe for the wearer. After trying out several, our team of volunteers found Teamoy to be a favorite. With their fun patterns, and solid manufacturing, this brand stands the test of time and heavy use, are very easy to wash in the wash machine/dryer, and come in all types of sizes and lengths with snaps. They did not leak for the women who tried them and were even better (and soft!) than the best selling pads on the market today. Highly recommended.

Raw Cacao-Avocado Pudding or Frosting (Gluten-free / Dairy-free)

Raw Cacao-Avocado Pudding (or Frosting)

We all have experienced that inner battle of wanting to give our children only healthy foods but also letting them have treats like the rest of the children get. This recipe is really a happy medium; it’s made using several “super-foods” but yet it tastes better that the sugary store-bought pudding.

Raw cacao is very high in antioxidants, iron, and magnesium. Raw honey is an alkaline-forming food that contains natural vitamins, enzymes, powerful antioxidants and other important natural nutrients. It is also a natural anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. Avocados are rich in healthy fats and contain nearly 20 essential nutrients, including vitamin E, B-vitamins, folic acid, potassium and fiber and dates are rich in calcium, iron, manganese, copper, magnesium potassium and sulphur.

Don't judge this by its name! I've had a couple "avocado haters" try this and they weren't able to figure out what was in it; if you pick the right avocado; not too ripe and not too green, I assure you, you won't be able to taste it at all. It tastes just like regular chocolate pudding, minus the dairy and processed sugar. Best of all, it takes minutes to make as it requires no cooking!

This creation can also be used as a frosting for cupcakes, cakes, or any other desserts.

Ingredients:

3/4 cup of mashed avocado
3 tbsp of raw cacao powder
Raw honey to taste (I use about 2 tbsp)
6 dates
1 tsp of vanilla extract
A pinch of salt
1/2 to 2 tbsp of coconut oil (optional)**

Preparation:

Using a food processor or high-power blender or food processor, blend all ingredients together until smooth and there aren’t any large pieces of dates.

Eat as is, or chill and serve.

** Coconut oil is going to make it a little bit thicker/harder. If using as frosting, I highly recommend you add it to the recipe.

Homeopathy for Colds and Flu

By Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na)

In the last few days, I have received several calls regarding flus and colds. The colds seem to be running their course with a good dose of sleep, plenty of homemade chicken soup and an alternation of Ferrum phos 6x and Nat mur 6x. Colds are ushered in with watery eyes, clear running nose and sneezing. They come on slowly.

The flu is a different story all together. When the flu hits, we feel like we have been hit by a truck. In the classes and workshops I teach, I emphasize "D" words (for the sake of memory) associated with the remedy Gelsemium. A Gelsemium flu has the following symptoms: droopy, dragging, dusky (face color is purplish), depressed, dazed, dizzy, dread (worse form), anticipatory diarrhea, dullness, diplopia (double vision). If any of these prevail, you have a match!

Each time I take a phone consultation with someone experiencing the flu, I ask that they call me on my voice mail and let me know if Gelsemium helped so that I can use that information to help others. Last week I recorded 15 call-backs of success! My mother was one of those calls. She called me from Florida and reported that she had a sore throat, mild fever and had been in bed for a day and a half. I worked all day Monday and Tuesday, so we did not speak for two days. By Wednesday, I checked in on her, and she was worse. She feared she might be headed toward pneumonia and that it was going to be many weeks before she recovered. The symptoms had changed. She said her eyes were drooping, she was dragging, and she was down. Well, those were enough "Ds" for me! I prescribed two doses of Gelsemium 30C taken three hours apart and asked her to call me back in 6 hours. I did not want to wake her with my phone call. Often the correct remedy results in much needed sleep. At 11pm, I received the call from her that I awaited. "I feel great!" she laughed."After the first dose, I slept like a baby and awoke with a new lease on life. My energy has returned and so has my desire to get out." Additionally, she reported the fever and sore throat gone. What remained was the onset of cold-like symptoms... runny nose, sneezing and a productive cough. That's the level of illness we can live with.

Next, I prescribed Calc Phos 6X alternating with Ferr phos 6X for convalescence. Now, when I suggested she drink homemade chicken soup, it made sense because she had the energy to do it. The following day, my mother called me to tell me she was going out to buy curtain rods!

Dizzie Gillespie, the famous jazz/bebop trumpet player, once said, "There've been two revelations in my life; the first was bebop, and the second was homeopathy." Every day, my belief in this God-given medicine is renewed through my many beloved clients and in my personal life. I want to pass this revelation on to all.
