How to Get Your Child Prepared for Boarding School

How to Get Your Child Prepared for Boarding School

A boarding school is, at times, the best educational option for a child. However, you must prepare your child adequately for him to enjoy the experience. Your child will be away from home and in the company of strangers for the first time. He will interact with children from different cultures and backgrounds. He will also have to adjust to a new school and personal schedule. Luckily, children are quick to adapt to a new environment if they are well prepared. Here are some tips on how to prepare your child for a boarding school.

1. Start Talking about it Early

Your child needs to understand your decision to transfer him to a boarding school. Do not wait until a couple of weeks before the school term starts to inform him of the decision. As soon as you make the decision, start talking to him about it. Let the child know what to expect in the new environment, including the challenges involved. Allow him to ask questions and express any fears about the change. Remain positive while talking about it because your child will adapt towards the change.

2. Teach Your Child Independence

One of the greatest challenges that your child may face at a boarding school is learning to do everything on his own. Teach your child how to keep his room, school items, and personal belongings organized. In fact, you need to teach your child independence even if you are unsure about enrolling him in a boarding school. Talk to the new school and find out the tasks that children do on their own. Teach your child to do those tasks at home without your help.

3. Choose Appropriate Clothing

If the boarding room has a no uniform policy, go shopping with your child. Give him the opportunity to pick the clothes he wants to wear in his new school, but make sure that the clothes are appropriate as well. Dolce & Gabbana Kids has a wide collection of kids’ clothes and items that would be perfect for a boarding school environment.

4. Assure Him of Regular Visits and Contact

Most schools allow parents to visit their kids on weekends and public holidays. You may be considering a boarding school because of a busy work schedule. Include regular visits in your schedule and talk to your child about it. Explore all means of keeping in touch including phone calls, email, or Skype. It is normal for a child to feel homesick, but if you stay in touch and visit often, the homesickness will not affect their learning.

Conclusion

Your child’s experience in a boarding school depends on how well you prepare him for the new environment. While kids adapt fast to a new environment, you need to start the process early. Involve him in the decision making process and explain the reasons for choosing a boarding school. Encourage him to express his concerns and worries and assure him of your support and regular visits. Remember to keep your promises and stay positive about the change.

Private Genetic Testing – What Does It Mean for You?

Private Genetic Testing – What Does It Mean for You?

For many people, the idea of private genetic testing still seems a little foreign. You may not yet fully understand the many benefits genetic testing can bring to the table. Some cases have made highlights and headlines with celebrities going through genetic testing to determine their risks for certain types of cancer. But that is only the beginning of what you can learn about your own health through private genetics testing and counseling.

The Importance of Genetics Counseling with Genetics Testing

Genetics, for all its recent advancements, is still a complex science. It acts as a sort of predictor offering likely outcomes – not necessarily definite outcomes. It determines your genetic predisposition for certain illnesses, conditions, and even physical characteristics. Genetics counseling helps you to understand the odds, the risks, and the things you can do to rewrite your genetic story.

For instance, your counselor may note that you have a genetic predisposition for heart disease based on what’s written in your DNA. That doesn’t mean you will have heart disease. Your counselor can connect you with resources that will help you make lifestyle changes and take medical precautions to mitigate those risks and reduce the likelihood of heart disease for you. Things like dietary changes, daily exercise, and certain medications can make a world of difference and prolong your good health and quality of life.

Breast cancer genetic testing is one of the ones making headlines today as some women are taking strong, preventative action based on the results of these tests. Not every woman needs to have this test, specifically for the BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 mutation. Those who do include women have a family history of this particular mutation, have had breast cancer at age 50 or younger (or are related to someone who has), are related to someone who has had cancer in both breasts, is related to someone who has had ovarian cancer, is of Ashkenazi Jewish decent, or is related to a man who has had breast cancer.

What is Pharmacogenomic Testing?

For people who have had negative reactions to medications in the past, or have experienced limited results from medications, pharmacogenomics might provide a great deal of insight as to how efficiently certain drugs will work. This is especially wise for people who may need to take expensive medications or who are taking medications that have the potential for strong negative side effects. This type of testing can provide predictive responses for more than 200 different medications and make recommendations to optimize medications and treatments in addition to avoiding adverse responses.

When it comes to genetic testing, cost is a factor, but a small one in light of the important benefits these types of tests have to offer. Whether you are interested in pre-pregnancy genetic screening, non-invasive prenatal testing, or other types of private genetic testing, Medcan offers superior testing and outstanding genetic counseling to help you sort through the facts about your test results and the impact they may have on your future.

How to Make Sure You Can Afford a Second Baby

How to Make Sure You Can Afford a Second Baby

Many couples start to think about a second baby as soon as the first leaves the baby phase. It’s a wonderful time of life and it is only natural to want to repeat the experience as soon as possible.

However, for most families, one of the biggest concerns is money. Once you’ve had a baby you realise just how much they cost and how difficult it can be to lose an income. However, these concerns don’t need to stop you expanding your family. Here are some great ways to make sure you can afford to bring a second child into your home.

Make Some Cuts

There are so many places you can save money, but food shopping is a big one. Start writing meal plans and shopping lists and try buying cheaper ingredients. Next, use a comparison site to see if you could save by switching suppliers. Finally, cancel any contracts or subscriptions you don’t need. On their own, these things might not save you much money, but it could quickly start to add up.

Keep Everything

Even if you aren’t certain that you will be having a second baby, keep things just in case. This should include bigger things like your cot and pram, but it’s also worth saving toys and clothes, as these can get very expensive. If space is an issue, see if you can use your parent’s attic or a friend’s garage for a while.

Find Free Ways to Have Fun

There is so much you can do without spending a penny. Some great ideas include:

 • Having a picnic in the park
 • Going for a walk
 • Going to a museum
 • Visiting your local children’s library
 • Joining baby or craft groups
 • Playing board games
 • Playing online games
 • Crafting at home

Check Your Entitlements

However you feel about benefits, it is worth checking out what you are entitled to. The system is in place to help families, so take what you need. If you are working, you may be entitled to working tax credits to help pay for your childcare, as well as child tax credit to help towards to costs of raising a family. Unless your household income is high, you will also be entitled to child benefit. While things could change following this year’s Snap Election, it is still worth checking the government’s online calculator for some guidance.

Make a Budget

Setting yourself a budget makes it much easier to monitor your spending and save money. Sit down and write a list of all your outgoings. Include all your bills and contracts but nothing else. Then, look at what’s left once this is taken away from your income. Use these figures to set a budget for your weekly food shops and any other extras you need to buy. You can download an app or planner to help you.

Generally, two babies aren’t twice as expensive. A lot of things like food or holidays are based on a family of four, so they won’t cost you extra. Another thing to remember is that you will never be able to afford a baby. We all want to give our children the best. However much you’ve got, you will want to give them more. Sometimes you just have to take the plunge. Good luck!

7 Ways to Reduce Your Child's Toxic Load

By Maggie Hammond, R.N. © 2017

We live in increasingly toxic environments and it can seem sometimes impossible to escape the different toxins and pollutants we are exposed to everyday. As a parent, it is perfectly understandable to desire to protect our children from an excessive toxic load. And there is no time more important than now while baby is still in his formative years, and early toxin exposure could affect his development. In this article, we’re going to provide a few simple tips on how to protect children from a toxic environment.

Try to Go Organic as Much as Possible

One of the areas where we let the most toxins in is through our foods. Between chemically laden foods and the various pesticides that enter in the production of most of our produce, it can be difficult to fight back against polluting agents. However, just by going organic, we can significantly reduce the levels of toxins we're exposed to.

It is no secret that much of our produce, even if it contains a great deal of beneficial nutrients, is full of harmful elements. However, it can be difficult and costly to go for all organic produce. The Environmental Working Group released a list of 12 fruits and vegetable that are the main culprits for pesticides and pollutants. By cutting the foods on this list and going for organic alternatives, you could reduce your exposure to pesticides by as much as 90%.

Some of the foods you should avoid at all costs include apples, strawberries and grapes. As a matter of fact, a single grape can contain as many as 15 pesticides.

Another way to reduce your baby’s toxic load is by breastfeeding, using donor milk, or opting for organic baby formulas when human milk is otherwise not a possibility. While there are a wide variety of U.S. made organic baby formulas, Europe seems to have a leg up in this area. Fortunately, most of these brands ship worldwide. However, before you go for a certain brand, it would be wise to check for reviews and see which one suits your needs and budget the best. Check this European Organic Baby Formula Guide for a rundown of the best European Organic Baby Formula brands on the market.

Environmental Working Group: Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen

Try to Avoid Plastic as Much as You Can

Did you know that plastic can be full of harmful chemicals and pollutants? And we’re not talking about dirt here, but dangerous chemical components known as BPAs which enter into their composition. You can start by going for BPA free plastic cups, bottles, straws and plastic wrap. However, even if you go for BPA free bottles and cups, you are still susceptible for Bisphenol S, which is another harmful chemical that enters in the production of most plastic components. Both elements have been linked to developmental and hormonal imbalances in children, which can be particularly harmful during their development stage. There is still no law that omits companies from hiding the level of BPS and BPA contained in their products, so you have to do your due diligence and check it for yourself.

Opt for Water or Natural Juice

When it comes to hydration, you should try to stick to fluoride free water or fresh natural juice when possible. Also, make sure that you limit the consumption of juice as well since a single cup of freshly squeezed juice can contain the same amount of sugar as multiple portions of the same fruit. You can add a little flavor to the juice by adding citrus or grapefruit juice into the mix. If you don’t have the luxury to go for full organic juice, try to stay away from juices containing artificial dyes such as Red 40 and Yellow 5 and 6. Both these artificial dyes have been linked with behavioral problems. You should also stay away from artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and sucralose as well as high fructose corn syrup.

Reduce Your Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields

While protecting yourself from electromagnetic fields can feel like an impossibility in this day and age, they can have a harmful effect on your health and have been linked to a wide variety of health conditions. Everything from cell phones, to computers, tablets, appliances, TVs and everything that is wirelessly connected emits a certain electromagnetic field which can be very harmful in the long run.

While there are still a lot of skeptics about the effects of electromagnetic fields on humans, there is a growing body of evidence that shows that they do in fact have a negative effect on our bodies. As a matter of fact, the World Health Organization went as far as classifying EMFs as "possibly carcinogenic to humans."

There are some simple ways you can reduce your EMF exposure. One of the easiest ways is to turn off your WiFi router at night. This step alone could cut your EMF exposure for a full eight hours. Turning all cellphones in the house to airplane mode when you’re not using them is another great way to cut EMF exposure, as well as buying EMF protection cases for your children’s iPads and Android tablets. You can also get a WiFi radiation blocker for your home's router and your cell phone as additional protection against EMFs.

Try to Keep the Use of Non Organic Personal Care Products to a Minimum

We are often not aware of how many toxins enter in the production of personal care products and the effects they have on our health and bodies. These can have a particularly disastrous effect on the health of little babies still in their development stage. Cosmetics specifically contain tons of harmful chemicals. Did you know that toxins contained in creams and cosmetics can enter the bloodstream through the skin and pass through your baby’s placenta? This is why it is essential for pregnant women to either stay away completely from cosmetics or go for natural options. This goes for everything from nail polish to skin creams, shampoo, conditioner, sunscreens and perfume.

Promote Clean Air in Your Home

Did you know that the air inside your home is often more toxic than the air outside? This may be shocking, but our homes are full of toxins and pollutants we are often completely oblivious about. According to data from the Environmental Protection Agency, the air in our home can be 3 to 5 times more toxic than outdoor air. There are some easy ways that you can clean the air in your house. First of all, ban any form of smoking in the house. You can also purify the air by using an air ionizer, ventilating properly, adding a few plants and using aromatherapy. Try to buy clean, chemical free cleaning products. And if you can’t, there are plenty of ways that you can create your own using household items like vinegar and sodium bicarbonate.

Make sure Your Child’s Sleeping Environment is Clean and Safe

While everyone wants to make their little one’s room as cute, many of us completely overlook toxic elements in the process. Paint can be full of harmful chemicals that can be especially dangerous to young children. The best option is going for VOC free paints. These paints are free of heavy metals, petroleum based solvents and formaldehyde. If you moved into a new home, make sure that the walls are lead free. Lead was officially banned in 1978, any room that was painted before that may contain lead. Find out when the last time the walls were painted. Also, when buying furniture, make sure any products you choose are made from untreated wood. Pressed woods are often full of tons of harmful glues and chemicals and can be dangerous. If you don’t know where to find organic, untreated wood, you can always go for old, second hand furniture as these tend to be made of natural wood more often. Also, try to stay away from second hand toys that were made before 1978.

Conclusion

As you can see, staying away from chemicals isn’t as difficult as it may seem. While you can never completely cut off chemicals from your environment, you can always start by taking steps to reduce. First, make sure that you try to opt for organic produce and foods as much as possible. If you can, try to avoid produce with the highest chemical content. Be sure to stay away from plastic cups, toys, wrap and bottles that aren’t BPA and BPS free. As far as pregnancy goes, make sure that you either reduce or completely pause use of personal care items and cosmetics that are known carcinogens. If your house is full of electronic devices, try to reduce your exposition to EMFs by cutting your Wi-Fi router at night, using airplane mode on your phones as much as possible, and by using EMF blocking equipment for your phones, tablets and computers. And last, but not least, be sure to use VOC paint in all the rooms in your house to ensure the air is free of heavy metals and petroleum based solvents.

Three Awesome Things You Can Do From Home

By Shanell Mouland © 2016

A lot of parents today choose to stay home to care for their children – especially with autism in the family. I, too, made this same decision a few years ago for my family. Staying home does not mean you cannot still take on awesome projects and be incredibly productive. There are actually many great things you can do from home and I'd like to take a look at a few of them here.

Start a Blog

One of the reasons I started Go Team Kate is because I wanted to share my experiences and knowledge with the rest of the world. Writing is (un)surprisingly soothing and can help you get a lot of things off your chest. The experiences you have today are also useful for others in the future, making sharing them that much more rewarding.

Besides, blogging is now easier than ever. You can get a hosting account and your own domain name for as little as $1 per month. There are even free services such as WordPress.com that you can use right away. Don’t know what to write about? Start with a journal. Soon, you’ll find a niche you can focus on and can share a lot of valuable information with your readers.

Open an Online Business

A blog is a great start when you’re relatively new to establishing an online presence, but don’t just stop there. A lot of moms are actually making a lot of money running an online business. It doesn’t have to be a particularly difficult or complicated business to run too. If you love baking, for instance, you can start marketing your homemade cookies online.

There are plenty of opportunities to try these days. Reselling existing products can be a good source of income. So can making your own – usually DIY-related products or crafts – and getting together with friends to produce an even wider range of items. You can also sell services online to earn money on a regular basis.

Go Back to School

Thanks to the wonders of distance learning, it is now easy to pursue a degree of your dreams without leaving the comfort of your house. Universities such as Bradley University are opening up courses in everything from management, and business administration, to counseling degrees online. The latter is particularly interesting, as an online counseling degree can turn your love for helping people - and working with children - into a very rewarding career.

Getting started with an online course is just as easy. You can start by picking the right program based on your interests, or the future you would like to pursue. You can then go through the enrollment process and can start the course in no time. Completing classwork, and earning a degree is even easier now that you can rely on online learning platforms to get course materials, access to lecturers, and other aids.

There are plenty of other great things you can do from home. Working with your kids in the home does not have to mean becoming less productive in other areas of your life. The key is finding an activity you love and taking that first step.

Which is better for you? Memory Foam or Innerspring Mattress

As adults, we tend to neglect our own rest because we’re always too busy. We start by cutting sleep off for the job, then we became parents and we forget what sleep actually is, and then we get in our senior years and we wonder why it’s so difficult to fall asleep and why the back hurts so bad.

Well, sleep is not just about putting your head down and closing your eyes. You have to create the right ambiance if you want to rest properly. And being rested is very important for your everyday activities from working to being a parent to having fun. When you’re rested, you’re more focused, energetic, and ready for cool things.

So, one of the most important aspects when it comes to your rest is the bed. After all, we spend one-third of our lives in bed so it might as well make it as comfortable as possible! Now, I know your mind went directly to luxurious linens and fluffy pillows, but at the base of all these there is the mattress. If the mattress doesn’t support your back the proper way, all the fluffy pillows in the world won’t do you any good!

When you first decide to get a new mattress, you’ll notice a rich offer with lots of designs and cool features. Still, in the end it all comes down to this: memory foam or innerspring? I’ve read some excellent reviews on memory foam mattresses and they do represent a modern product but the innerspring designs have some cool features as well. The most important is to choose a mattress that fits your needs and your budget so let’s take a look at some pros and cons for each.

The Memory Foam Mattress

The first advantage to memory foam is weight – this mattress is lighter and easier to maneuver than any innerspring! Even more, some memory foam mattresses are delivered in a box cutting the shipping costs and your effort to hoist it up the stairs, to your bedroom.

Next on the list of pros is the motion transfer. Memory foam is designed to absorb most movement so, when your partner will toss and turn, you won’t feel most of it. It’s also a surface that adapts to your body shape and distributes the weight evenly, so there won’t be any hurtful pressure points.

Finally, memory foam should be the first choice if you are a side sleeper. Because of its amazing properties, a memory foam mattress keeps the spine aligned and doesn’t allow for tension to be created in your body while you’re sleeping on the side.

The Innerspring

This type of mattress is more traditional, but most designs today feature a modern inner structure with coils and springs adjusted for better sleep and support. While it’s true that the surface is more prone to motion transfer, a high-quality innerspring will be far from a bouncy castle (a comparison with old innerspring mattresses).

This type of mattress is also more durable and less expensive even when it comes with all the bells and whistles. On the other side, a high-quality memory foam mattress can be costly and you don’t really know how the surface will feel like until you test it a few nights in a row. Finally, innerspring mattresses are better for people who tend to sleep on their back as they offer amazing back support for this position. Overall, the only one who can decide which mattress is best for you, is you. So make sure to do some research and don’t let anyone bully you into buying an expensive product if you know you don’t need it.

Best Rice Cooker Review: 2017

BEST RICE COOKER REVIEW: 2017

In 2017, the rice cooker is not something so rare, but it has become quite a common thing in many households. However, with all the models that are available on the market, it can be difficult to decide on the best rice cooker for your kitchen. Indeed, the most important features are precision cooking and the quality of the cooked rice, but lately people started to value durability and ease-of-use too. But let’s have a look at the most popular rice cookers on the market right now.

Zojirushi Rice Cookers

The Zoirushi rice cooker is one of the most popular and successful models on the market. The characteristic most often associated with this brand is quality, even if we are talking about the basic models or the high-end ones. Usually you can find a Zojirushi product somewhere between $99 and $200. One of the main advantages of this brand is the fact that their rice cookers rely on an automatic computer chip that adjusts the time cooking and the temperature inside. As such, you can make your rice soft, hard, watery or dry, depending on your taste.

Another main advantage is the HI (Induction Heating), which is extremely useful. It runs on a magnetic field that heats up the rice instantly. Thanks to this type of heating, the process of cooking can be controlled entirely. At the same time, perhaps the main drawback of Zojirushi is the fact that they’re not really cheap which might be a problem.

Aroma Housewares Rice Cookers

Among the advantages you can find in the Aroma Housewares Rice Cookers, you can definitely count a large array of appliances. They are suitable for a great deal of customers and fit their needs and tastes. For example, you can purchase the conventional rice cooker, based on a pot within a pot. One of their definite advantages is the fact that it’s really easy to use and to maintain the rice cooker, just with a click of a switch. When the food is done, the system automatically switches to the warming mode.

Regarding the price, Aroma Housewares is famous for offering the best prices on the market. As opposed to other brands out there, they do have a really large array to choose from. Their definite advantage is the fact that you can even buy an appliance from them for less than $20, which is amazing. The only disadvantage many people reported is the fact that it has a slow cooking time. Yes, we are working with slow food, but still, nobody wants to waste hours in a row for some rice.

Now that we had a look at the two most successful brands, it is time to bring some examples and to show you what models in particular are preferred by the people.

Zojirushi NS-TSC10 5-1/2-Cup (Uncooked) Micom Rice Cooker

This model is indeed at the high end of the price spectrum, but it is definitely worth it if you decide to make an investment in it. It is spacious enough and can serve maximum 12 people simultaneously. You can even enjoy the leftovers for the next meal, for example. The fuzzy logic technology offers you lots of liberty while cooking, allowing you to leave for work and let the appliance cook the rice until you get back. You also have 2 delay time settings, which is kind of unique on the market. However, one major disadvantage is the fact that the cooking pot is made of aluminum coated with Teflon, whereas you can find other stainless steel models which are more durable.

Aroma Simply Stainless 3-Cup (Uncooked) 6-Cup (Cooked) Rice Cooker

Aroma Simply is another one of the Aroma products that is favored by many people. It is affordable and attractive, but at the same time sophisticated. It definitely has an edge over the other models, but most of them can only cook white rice. This appliance holds 3 cups of white rice and 2 cups of brown rice. Another thing which people love about the Aroma Simply Stainless Rice Cooker is the material used for the cooking pot. As opposed to regular rice cookers, Aroma Simply uses surgical grade cooking pot made of stainless steel. There still are two disadvantages for this model, namely the fact that the ARC-750SG offers limited control over the process and it’s not that flexible, together with the fact that the cooking pot is not non-stick, so it requires more time and effort when it comes to cleaning.

Keeping your child safe from allergies

As a parent, you want to do everything you can to keep your child safe from allergies. Whether they’re susceptible to allergens like dust or mites, or foods like peanuts or pineapple, there are plenty of steps you can take to keep them from experiencing a reaction. Utilize these tips to help prevent allergies from developing during the first two years of life, which is when experts agree that children are most likely to develop long-term sensitivities.

Install a UV Lamp

Even if you keep your home clean and tidy, there are still plenty of airborne allergens floating about. Pet dander, dust mites, and mold can all linger in the air and cause problems for your newborn child. One way to eliminate these hazards is by installing a UV lamp in your home. A UV lamp works by emitting ultraviolet light inside of your HVAC unit to help sterilize organic growth that happens inside the unit. While an air filter does catch most airborne particles, a UV lamp goes a step further by tackling everything it misses. In particular, UV lamps are great for reducing your child’s chance of developing asthma, catching a cold, or having any other allergy symptoms.

Avoid Scented Products

Scented soaps and perfumes can fix the lingering scent of a baby’s blowout. However, they could also be putting your child at risk for severe skin reactions, such as childhood eczema. If you don’t want your child to get dry, itchy skin, you should probably look into avoiding scented soaps, laundry detergent, and anything else that touches your baby’s skin. One in five kids develops eczema at some point, but luckily, its severity does decrease as they get older.

Feed Babies Breastmilk

As a new mom, you might be feeling a bit overwhelmed with it all, especially when it comes to feeding. You might be tempted to switch over to cow’s milk or formula in order to give yourself a break. However, doing so can put your baby at risk for a number of allergic reactions.

Drinking mother's milk helps a baby develop a healthy immune system that's prepared for exposure to allergens later in life. Plus, a mother’s milk has proteins that are safe for the baby. Cow’s milk can sometimes have a negative effect on the child, giving them stomach pain or diarrhea.

Introduce Food Slowly

Babies with parents who have a food allergy are much more likely to develop a similar condition, so it’s important to introduce new foods slowly to identify any issues. Always start with single-ingredient foods so you can immediately pinpoint any allergic reactions. Wait three to five days before introducing any new foods so your child's body has time to fully digest and process the initial food. Common food allergens, such as peanuts or shellfish, should be introduced after the baby has shown the ability to handle more basic food.

There’s no foolproof way to keeping your child safe from allergies. However, by taking these precautions, you can do your absolute best to protect them.

That’s almost never convenient and having to wait before you can finally hear your child can be quite displeasing and even nerve wracking. With a doppler however, you get the change to do it yourself. It even comes with the fantastic benefit of not even having to leave your home.

There are a number of companies now that offer safer STD testing in a private and confidential service that can check for STDs. They are a good way to get tested and discover the results quickly and in confidence. If you discover that you do have an infection, then you can seek medical advice.

Can STDs be Treated While Pregnant?

In some cases, STDs can be treated while you are pregnant. Infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, trichomonas, and BV can be treated successfully with antibiotics that are safe during pregnancy. However, other infections such as hepatitis B, genital herpes, and HIV cannot be cured, but there are antiviral drugs that can be given to reduce the risk of infection to your baby. Also, some infections can be passed to the baby during delivery. In these cases, it is important for the delivery to be monitored and the baby to receive treatment as soon after the delivery as possible.

What are the Risks from STDs to the Baby?

The risks and severity of the STDs vary according to the type of infection. For example, less than 0.1 percent of babies contract herpes, however, the earlier you seek advice, the better it is for the baby. With Bacterial Vaginosis or BV, there is an imbalance of the bacteria in the vagina. It can cause premature labor if not found early enough, which is why it is important to be checked for STDs before or after you become pregnant.

Chlamydia is caused by a bacterium that can spread to the uterus and the fallopian tubes if it is left untreated. There is also a chance that it could cause pneumonia to develop in your baby after delivery. Antibiotics can effectively cure the bacteria, and your doctor will test you again in the third trimester to make sure there is no further infection.

The infection Trichomonas is caused by a small parasite. Around 80,000 women are thought to be affected each year in the US. If you have this infection while pregnant, then it can cause premature rupturing of the membranes. The infection can be treated with Flagyl, and both you and your partner need to be treated. Symptoms are not usually found in men who are infected, so it is important that they get treatment in any case.

One of the most common STDs in the US is the Human Papillomavirus or HPV. It is a group of viruses that make up about 100 strains. Thirty of these are sexually transmittable and can infect any sexually active area of the body.

Syphilis can be hard to detect because the sore is usually inside the vagina and is often painless. Only testing of the sore or a blood test will determine if you have syphilis. It can cause early birth or miscarriage, so it is vital that you get yourself checked as soon as you know you are pregnant.

Probably one of the most serious infections for mother and baby is HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It can be passed to the baby during pregnancy and delivery, however, sometimes a cesarean section will be performed to prevent spread. Without treatment, there is a 25% chance that the virus will pass to the baby. Doctors can give anti-viral medications to the mother to reduce the symptoms and lessen the chances of the virus transferring. The baby will also be given the anti-viral treatment for the first six weeks of their life.

Prevention is better than Cure

The best way to prevent such infections is to be careful when you are with sexual partners. Ideally, you should both make sure you are safe before starting the relationship. However, this is not always easy to do. If you are unsure, then you should always insist on the man wearing protection. Although it isn’t as safe and abstaining, it is a lot safer than no protection at all.

If you ensure that you get tested as soon as possible, then there should be no risk to you or the baby, you can then have a straightforward pregnancy and delivery and have a healthy baby.

Is Laser Hair Removal Right For You?

Is Laser Hair Removal Right For You?

Laser hair removal is becoming a popular way of removing unwanted body hair. It is a commonly offered service, though it pays to do your research and choose a good place to get it done, such as laser hair removal Los Angeles experts, Your Laser Skin Care for those in the LA area. Remember that different clinics and salons use different equipment and you want one that will offer the best results for the skin and hair type you have.

But, is laser hair removal a better option for you than other approaches like waxing or shaving? Here, we look at some of the details.

Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?

While it is often advertised as a permanent solution, laser hair removal can require a maintenance treatment around once a year. This is because while it does stop the hair follicles you currently have from growing new hair, a lot of people end up growing new hair follicles, which need to be treated. This means that while you will definitely get a permanent reduction in hair after the treatment is complete, you may still see some hair growth after time and need further treatment or to continue shaving or waxing.

Can It Be Used Anywhere?

All body hair can be treated with laser hair removal techniques. However, because the lasers are dangerous for your eyes, it can't be used for eyebrow shaping or hair on the cheeks and temples. Other unwanted facial hair, for instance on the chin or upper lip, can be treated.

Does It Work on Everyone?

Laser hair removal used to only be recommended for people with light, untanned skin, but the technology has moved on and now it is suitable for almost all skin types. However, the color of your body hair affects the type of laser that can be used and how effective the treatment will be. The easiest types of hair to treat are dark ones, with blonde and red hair being much more difficult to remove. Some salons and offices do offer laser hair removal for all hair colors, but to do this they need to use a different type of laser, which is less accurate at getting the follicles and may, therefore, give less perfect results (it will still significantly reduce hair growth).

Does It Hurt?

Laser hair removal isn't pain-free, and you will feel a very brief stinging sensation as each hair follicle is hit by the laser. It is more irritating and uncomfortable than painful – certainly less painful than waxing on sensitive areas like the underarms and bikini line. However, it is worth bearing in mind that it is not totally pain-free like other solutions such as hair removal creams. You may also notice some redness and swelling afterward, though this goes away in a day or two.

Laser hair removal can be a very convenient way to get rid of your unwanted hair growth on a virtually permanent basis, so if you feel like it's the right option for you, it is a good idea to book a consultation.

4 Topics Moms Don’t Talk About After Giving Birth

4 Topics Moms Don’t Talk About After Giving Birth

Having a child causes you to become more responsible, more selfless, loving, and caring, but there are still some things that experienced mothers don’t usually talk about. These topics may be quite personal in nature, but it is also crucial that new and experienced moms open up and talk about the changes that they have experienced.

For one, mothers who have delivered babies vaginally might consider visiting David Ghozland and getting a labiaplasty consultation. Some parts of your body are expected to change with childbirth, such as enlarged and engorged breasts due to producing milk. Other changes are talked about so infrequently that a new mom could panic since she doesn’t know what to anticipate. Here are four physical changes that new moms need to be aware of so that they can be ready for their futures.

1. Vaginal and Perineal Tearing

Delivering a baby is completely natural and a testament to the strength of women throughout history. On the other hand, a complication-free natural delivery doesn’t always mean that mom comes out unscathed. Women who have experienced childbirth really need to talk about the merits of labiaplasty and the reasons why this medical procedure might be needed after vaginal and perineal tearing. Doctors traditionally use stitches to help reconstruct the vaginal area directly after birth, but very little follow-up work is ever performed. You should feel free to talk to other mothers about their vaginal delivery births if you feel that you are experiencing discomfort or delayed recovery.

2. Stretch Marks

You don’t just get them from having a baby, but stretch marks are common in women who have given birth. Sometimes they consist of a very small and faint patch of marks around the thighs, abdomen, and breasts, and other times they can be red, purple, raised, and cover large portions of the skin. Whatever happens to your body during childbirth, realize that time normally has a very healing effect. You can cover them up or show them off, just remember that your stretch marks are normal and a result of delivering a beautiful, healthy child.

3. Digestive Changes

Some women are able to eat the same types of diet they followed pre-pregnancy while others find that they are suddenly unable to tolerate dairy products, red meat, alcohol, or a number of other types of food. You may develop a calcium deficiency as a result of giving birth or find that you cannot digest large meals anymore. Digestive changes are common in women who have given birth and you can meet with your doctor if you’d like to get a better outlook on your diet plans.

4. Postpartum Depression

This is a topic that very few new moms want to bring up. Being depressed after having a baby is nothing to be ashamed of, yet that is how many mothers who go through postpartum depression feel. Here’s the thing - anyone feeling depressed, despondent, or sad all the time after having a new baby needs help, both for her child and herself. It is a common occurrence and it doesn’t always go away on its own. So, congratulations on becoming a new mom and in time you will learn to love and accept all of the changes you have gone through. You now have a little person in your life who will love you unconditionally. Learn to love yourself in the right manner and you will be completely fulfilled.

Mother’s Guide to Healthy Dexterity

Mother’s Guide to Healthy Dexterity

There is a famous proverb that says “HEALTH IS WEALTH" and very rightly as it’s been said. Health is the most important factor required by a human being, especially mothers, in order to survive, to enjoy the fruits of her hard work, to be able to carry out the day to day chores herself and not be dependent on anyone else, to be able to provide for her family and celebrate and roister little joys of life that come from just being healthy and hearty.

WHO (World Health Organization) states that:

"Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." This definition has not been amended since 1948.

A reasonable health care routine can be judged by an experience that we go through while boarding an airplane and the cabin pressures go low during the flight, it’s been advised to put on an oxygen mask. While it may not be very appealing for some people to be selfish and put on their masks first, how will you be able to help others while you are yourself struggling to acquire oxygen?

Similarly it can be said that how will you be helpful, functional and sympathetic towards your loved ones once you are yourself not in the best of your health. It has been advised to not only take care of yourself but to keep a wise track of your health and the symptoms that occur in your body, not to ignore them and immediately see a doctor if you see anything abnormal taking place. Being healthy, fit and fine comprises of three factors. It may be related to your physical self-care, mental self-care and your spiritual self-care.

The physical self-care may bring into account your diet, your exercise regime, and your sleep pattern. All these factors make up a healthy and effective physical self-care pattern. Even if just one of the components lack in delivery of the required outcome, you are definitely going to pay the price in the longer run.

Our body has a certain level of requirement in terms of nutrition, vitamins and carbohydrates. All need to be fulfilled as per the body’s needs. A poor diet may profoundly affect the immune system and in return increasing the stress levels and risk for chronic diseases. If you are not able to do the trick and accomplish nutritional requirements of the body you may make use of Rain Soul Pure Wellness supplements that tend to make up for the deficiencies in your body and make you capable of doing well in terms of nutrition.

Exercise is a significant, paramount and imperative aspect of a healthy lifestyle. In today’s world where mostly people have sedentary jobs where they just have to sit in front of the screen from morning till evening people become lazy and lethargic which in return affects their cardio system as well as mental wellbeing. There are several exercise regimes available in the market/online which are easy to approach and manageable to perform like yoga burn. It is highly recommended to pick up an exercise routine that suits your lifestyle, moods, and body type to show results in lesser amount of time before one gets bored and disheartened.

Taking care of one’s self in all the possible ways that are within our reach is vital, indispensable and a fundamental ingredient to fight against the odds we face in our daily lives. To be a stronger member of the family in order to be able to provide for their lack of management without you.

Going Back to College: How to Make Time for Your Kids as You Study

Going Back to College: How to Make Time for Your Kids as You Study

Although college is generally seen as the next step up for high school graduates, the number of adults returning to education later in life is on the rise. With tuition fees higher than ever before, many high schoolers decide to pursue a career instead of a college degree and go to school later in life when they are in a better financial position to afford doing so. On the other hand, graduates make up a huge chunk of adult learners; many people who graduated from college in their early 20s decide to go back and build upon their education after years, or even decades, of being a part of the workforce. Moreover, good social work essay writing services are available online, so you don’t need to worry if you happen to be very busy at some point.

Among adult learners are many parents. Working toward a bachelor's or master's degree can significantly improve career prospects, and enable parents to give their family a better life. Yet juggling studies and parenthood can be difficult; so how can you be sure to make time for your little ones and avoid missing out on seeing them grow up as you study?

Tip #1 - Study for an Online Degree

Many of us today have no idea what we ever did without the internet. Younger people may not even remember a time when it wasn’t around. Going online can help us with a range of different tasks from working to buying and selling, and getting a degree is no different. In the digital age, it’s entirely possible to study for your entire master's in social work online. Students can choose their own study times and work from home – this makes it far easier to spend more time with your children and eliminates the guilt that comes with being away from them and in class for a large chunk of the day.

Tip #2 - Schedule in Family Time

Whether you’re hoping to get on to one of the many reputable online MSW programs available, or decide to take the traditional route of on-campus classes, it’s important to have a schedule to stick to, helping you to stay on top of your work and divide your time between each of your commitments.

Don’t forget, however, that making time for breaks and having fun with your family is as important - not just for your children, but also for you, as all work and no play can lead to exhaustion! It’s a good idea to make sure that you take at least one weekend day off, for example, to do something fun as a family together.

Tip #3 - Study Together

If your little ones are in school, you can use this to your advantage by studying together! While your children are getting on with their homework, you can sit with them and do your own revisions and college work – this will mean that you’re able to spend some time together, and even learn different things from each other. It also allows mom or dad to keep an eye on the kids and make sure that their homework is completed, too.

Going back to college as a parent has several benefits, but it has the potential to steal away precious time spent with our children if we don't take proactive steps to avoid this. Did these tips help? We’d love to hear from you in the comments.

Regular doctor’s appointments and how they can help you

By Alex Martin © 2017

Going to the doctor is mostly seen as something people do when they are in need of treatment. Going to the doctor when there’s apparently nothing wrong with you may seem a bit odd for some, especially younger people who feel that their fortuitous age means that they don’t need to schedule a visit. Doctor’s appointments are usually made based on the symptoms people experience, but you don’t actually need to wait until you’re pooping blood to go to see your doctor (you should definitely do it if you’re experiencing that symptom, by the way). There are actually many benefits that come with going to the doctor’s cabinet regularly for routine check-ups.

Here are some reasons why you would want to go see your doctor every now and again, even if you’re not ill.

General health

It’s important to maintain your health at all times, and going to the doctor will help with this as you will be getting all the recommended injections. A visit may also include proactive tests that can detect something problematic that gets worse with time. The reason many people managed to survive through difficult medical situations was because the problem was found early on and gave medics time to treat it properly and effectively.

Regular stats

There are many numbers that can fly off the charts without us even noticing. These numbers are usually a wakeup call from the body, but it doesn’t actually ring until you see the numbers. Checking on your cholesterol level regularly, for example, as well as a blood pressure, will let you know if you have the body of a 20 year old or an 80 year old.

Medical record

Your medical record can be of vital importance if you fall with illness. It will help doctors identify the problem you are dealing with and it will also help them draw more conclusions on various matters regarding your health. Your medical record is updated with each check-up, so it’s good to go see your regular physician once in a while.

Doctor-patient relationship

This relationship is developed with time, and having regular visits will definitely help you strengthen that relationship a lot faster. It’s important to be in a good relationship with your doctor because they, are after, play a key part in your health. More than that, a skilled physician can understand you, your situation, and your body a lot better if they see you more often, and thus give you the treatment or advice you need most.

A doctor’s visit isn’t always someone’s idea of a good time, but it can help make sure that we won’t have a bad time later on. Health maintenance and threat prevention are more than good reasons to pursue a better relationship with your doctor --- today.

Top ways to recycle old electronics and gadgets you don’t need anymore

Top ways to recycle old electronics and gadgets you don’t need anymore

Electronics are never in this world for long. Either you ditch old gear because you’ve got yourself a nice little upgrade, or it becomes ancient and doesn’t work properly anymore. As easy as it is to get rid of old gadgets, it’s equally as easy to dispose of old electronics the wrong way.

Gadgets and electronic devices require special care as far as throwing them out is concerned. So what are we supposed to do if we can’t just throw them into the trash? For starters, you should check out Mytrendyphone.co.uk for up to date information about recycling.

Next, look into the rest of this article as we go more in-depth about the various solutions available for electronics recycling, and how you can go about ridding yourself of old gear. There is more than one way to get this job done, and you have the convenience of choosing the one that’s easiest for your situation and available resources.  Let’s start with the basics:

Never throw in the trash

Whenever you have electronics that need to be disposed of, reconsider throwing them in the trash. If you do that, these gadgets will end up with all the rest of the garbage which will be piled up and burned. The problem is, electronic devices usually contain toxic substances (among the most toxic known to man, actually) which get released into the environment through burning. That’s why it’s so important to take special care of how we dispose of them.

Donate

This is one of the best ways in which you can get rid of stuff you don’t want. If you have electronics that still work but are just too outdated for your needs, donate them. You might afford an upgrade, but there are plenty of people out there that have never had a laptop or tablet device, not to mention a smartphone. Since you don’t need them anyway, give them to someone who will make good use of them for as long as they remain functional.

Give it back to the manufacturer

In most places, manufacturers also provide recycling solutions. They provide recycling programs that offer a safe and beneficial disposal solution so you can pretty much dump the old gadgets from the same place where you bought them. It’s convenient. Check to see which manufacturers in your area provide such services and where you can take your stuff.

E-Stewards

These are recycling networks which provide recycling assistance for broken and old gadgets and electronics. They are offering their services to people in a particular area/jurisdiction, so that you may safely and correctly dispose of your electronics when needed. Check and see if your area has such advantageous opportunities for recycling.

Variety stores

There are many stores like Best Buy which are more than glad to take your old electronics. In some cases, you can even get a discount on modern devices off of that, so it’s even better. Of course, this differs from store to store and whether or not they offer any discount or promotion. At the very least, you get rid of your old electronic devices.

Why bother?

In case you are wondering why you should even bother with finding a proper recycling point or service for your old tech, consider this: Each time devices like laptops and smartphones are recycled, necessary resources are recovered from these devices like gold, silver, and copper. These then go into the making of new phones and laptops, so you are contributing to the manufacturing of your new smartphone or notebook. There’s also that little environmental issue -- if we don’t stop polluting, we’ll run out of a planet to keep destroying.

Pregnancy Cues You May Miss Before Missing Your Period

By Alex Martin © 2017

Many today believe that the earliest tell-tale sign of a pregnancy is a missed period, but that’s not the case. Other early pregnancy symptoms before a missed period lend great insight for a woman in tune with her body, so she knows right away when life is beginning to grow inside. If you’re a first-time mom (or hoping to be) you may not immediately attribute these cues to a potential pregnancy, but if you know what to look for, and what experiences you may have in the very early stages of pregnancy, you will be able to visit with a physician or midwife sooner.

Frequent need to urinate

You’ve probably heard pregnant women joke about having to pee all the time, but did you also know that a frequent need to urinate is a common early sign of pregnancy? Unless you are diabetic, have a urinary tract infection, or some other condition that makes you urinate frequently, a sudden need to urinate more often can be an indication of a pregnancy!

Spotting

If you notice that you are experiencing spotting in late pregnancy, this can be cause for concern. However, if you are not pregnant (to your knowledge) and you notice bleeding or spotting that cannot be explained by your regular menstrual cycle, you may be pregnant. This can be a tricky thing to diagnose, however, because early pregnancy spotting usually occurs around the time when you would be expecting to experience your regular menstrual cycle -- instead, it is 'implantation bleeding.'

Fatigue or lethargy

If you suddenly begin to feel very tired or lethargic, you might be pregnant. This goes beyond the typical feelings of being tired at the end of the day. When you are pregnant, some days you can be so tired you cannot function. If there is no other medical explanation for your fatigue, it could be a sign of pregnancy. You will likely feel very tired throughout your first trimester, as your body is going through tremendous changes and hormonal fluctuations – it’s a hard job growing a human being!

Cramping

If you have unexplained cramping that feels similar to menstrual cramping, it could be a sign of pregnancy. This is different than your typical monthly menstrual cramping in that it can come at any time of the month, and may be more intense than you are used to. If you are having cramping that you cannot attribute to your monthly cycle, take a pregnancy test, or see your physician or midwife. If you’re not pregnant, the cramping could be a sign of something that needs to be addressed.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you might be pregnant, even if you haven’t yet missed a period. The only way to know for sure is to take a pregnancy test. Remember, too, that these symptoms are not necessarily an indication that you are pregnant, only that you may be be. And if so - congratulations! Let the baby-growing commence.

Why You Should Consider a Career in Education

By Alex Martin © 2017

Why You Should Consider a Career in Education

There are many misconceptions that exist today about seeking a career in the education sector, but for those interested in the field, it is often found to be the most rewarding experience of life. Many believe that teachers are consistently overworked, underpaid, and must have a love for small children in order to be successful in the field. However, many of the preconceived notions are incorrect. A career in education is much more than what happens inside the classroom. Education offers different exciting opportunities at every level, and each plays an important role both in and out of the classroom setting. Consider the following if you feel a career in education could be right for you.

Endless Opportunities

Working in the education sector means playing a role in a constantly shifting environment, no matter which area of the field you go into. Opportunities in education are nearly boundless, and offer exciting roles for people from all walks of life. If you have a passion for helping to develop young minds, look into an early childhood education degree at Gwynedd Mercy. Desire to go in-depth with a subject and pass your knowledge of history or science on to the next generation? A career in education can be focused outside the classroom as well with work readily available for skilled administrators, nurses, and other more generalized areas that can meld your personal talents with your interest in education. With the right requirements, a substantial income can also be made while practicing something you’re passionate about. Take your time to explore all areas of education to find the one that suits you best.

Life Experience Matters

Your lived experience is perhaps the single most important thing you can bring to work in an education setting. Education is a field that has been dominated by women since WWII, however, studies show that the more diversity a child is exposed to from role models and leaders, the more well-rounded their education experience can be. Consider the impact that you could have in a child’s life. Maybe you’re a member of a minority group with a unique insight into the world that you can offer to your students. Maybe you’re an aspiring male teacher with a heart for teaching grade school and early childhood education who can exemplify a strong leader to his students. Maybe you’re an aspiring female teacher in a STEM field who can inspire other women to get involved in science and technology. Representation has shown to be a powerful tool in a child’s educational tool-box, and you have the incredible opportunity to be part of that story simply by being you!

Inspiring Minds

Working in education can be as inspiring as it is challenging. Teachers tell stories of another teacher before them who inspired them - often as a child - to follow a path toward education. While you may find yourself challenged on a daily basis, consider how the knowledge you impart can become the basis of the next big idea in science, technology, or social justice. Think of the ways you were inspired by your education, and imagine passing on that passion for knowledge onto your students every day. It’s pretty incredible! Working in the education sector is not all lesson plans and grading quizzes. As an educator, you play a vital role in furthering society and shaping a better world for the future — perhaps the most important position there is. If you’re excited about seeing the potential for greatness in every student, look no further than a career in education.

Venturing into a career in education is not for the faint of heart, but can be the most rewarding experience of your life when you find the position that’s right for you. Do your research before seeking out a degree program, and learn your state’s requirements for entering into the education sector. Whether you want to teach kindergarten, work in a district office, or become a single-subject teacher for high-schoolers or higher education, you’ll go to work every day with the opportunity to change the world little-by-little, student by student. If you’re excited to share your passion for knowledge and inspire future generations every day, a career in education could be right for you.

These are a handful of the best DNA tests money can buy. When it is important to know more about the places and people we come from, these are the testing locations to turn to. No matter what you’re trying to find out, a DNA test can provide a lot of answers. Whether you desire to know if your great grandparents came from a different country, or if your child’s father is who you think it is, a DNA test will solve the problem. When it comes to price and services offered, these tests stand out from the crowd.
